10 Quick And Easy Home Remedies For Curing Stomach Aches

Rice Water

Rice water is simply the water left-over in the pot after you cook any plain white rice. The drink acts as a demulcent – a substance that relieves irritation or inflammation of a mucous membrane, like the lining of your stomach, by forming a thin protective film.

You can use double the amount of water you would normally use to cook your rice: 1 part rice to 4 parts water. Cook like normal, when the rice begins to soften turn off the heat and cover the pot. Drain and drink hot or cold and you have cooked rice for later which is precisely what you should be eating if you have a bad stomach!   

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint helps to improve the flow of bile, which aids digestion, from the liver to the gallbladder. Mint also works as a mild relaxant to gently sooth stomach muscles. Peppermint in many forms will is relive suffering from gas or bloating.

Fresh mint leaves grows abundant in many environments and should be available in your local market. Grab a couple of handfuls of fresh peppermint, throw it in a mug and add boiling water – it will be ready to drink in 5 minutes. Alternatively, chew the fresh leaves or buy mint tea bags, peppermint candy or peppermint cordial to dilute.   

Warm Lemon Water

Warm lemon water can help a stomach ache if the pain is caused by indigestion. Lemon has high acidity which stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid breaks down our food. By increasing the amount of hydrochloric acid being produced you are speeding up the process of digestion.

Simply add the juice of one whole lemon to a mug of warm water. Warm lemon water is also the best drink to combat dehydration, and that extra hydration will keep things flushed and running smoothly.   

Fennel and Fennel Water

Fennel seeds contain anethole, a volatile oil that can stimulate the secretion of digestive juices in the body. They are extremely effective in curing indigestion. They can also help control inflammation and ease stomach pain.

If you are suffering from indigestion, or suffer regularly from indigestion, chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds when you have discomfort or immediately after a meal. To make tea add the fennel seeds to boiling water and let sit for 5 minutes to cool, before straining and drinking.

Pregnant women should not consume fennel.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is very effective in relieving the  cramping pain of indigestion and also that nauseous, washing-machine stomach. It cleanses the gut, absorbing unwanted nutrients and alkalises bodily pH. It can also reduce the discomfort of heartburn.

Drink 1 or 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar straight from the bottle. You can also dilute it in a glass of water. Try to get an organic apple cider vinegar, general rule of thumb is if it comes in a plastic bottle don’t buy it!   

Ginger Root Tea

Ginger contains natural chemicals called gingerols and shogaols which help relax smooth muscle, like the muscles on the walls of the intestinal tract. Ginger increases blood flow, body temperature and digestion, and is a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Ginger root is very effective in relieving stomach cramp and accompanying nausea.

Add a peeled and minced, mashed, grated or finely chopped piece of ginger of 1-2 inches in size to some boiling water. Boil for a few minutes longer and let cool for 5 before straining. Add a bit of honey to taste. Fresh ginger root tea is more effective than a flat ginger ale.

Soda and Lime

Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda is a strong antacid. It helps neutralise stomach acid, and the carbonation will make you burp relieving pressure in your belly from overeating and the associated pain. It helps with indigestion and constipation.

Lime like lemon with its high acidity can ease stomach ache. Just add one teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of warm water. A brand soda water will also work. You can add the juice of one lime to either.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory that relaxes the smooth muscle of the upper digestive tract, easing the contractions that push food through the digestive system. It is especially effective in easing deep dull stomach cramps and stomach muscle spasms. Chamomile also has a calming effect on nerves thanks to its sedative nature – his is why chamomile is also recommended at before bed to help you sleep.

Put 1-2 teaspoons of dried chamomile in a mug and add boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes. Alternatively use a bag of chamomile tea. Sip slowly.

Heat Treatment

Applying heat to the stomach can relieve stomach ache by loosening and relaxing the muscles. It increases the flow of blood to the surface of the skin it is in contact with dulling how we register the pain there.

You can use heat pads or hot water bottles. Heating raw salt or rice in the microwave and adding it to a clean sock is an effective home-made heat compress.

You can also brew any of the above boiling water suggestions in a large mug and move the mug slowly around your stomach while you are waiting for it to cool. Just be careful not to spill it. This will so relieve trapped wind.    

Burnt Toast

Charcoal is effective in neutralising toxins in your system and activated charcoal is commonly used to cure minor food and alcohol poisoning or contaminated water poisoning. The charcoal hunts down and absorbs the bad bacteria and microbes that are causing your stomach problems. It will also help to process the food or alcohol faster.

Eating a slice of burnt toast is a sufficient home remedy method of consuming charcoal. Burnt toast does contain harmful carcinogens, but as a one-off remedy it is not a concern. You can buy activated charcoal online or in a pharmacy or health store, it is a common supplement. With severe cases of food poisoning you need to see a doctor.
